Kitchen Plumbing Fixtures and Counter Height. Hawaii Maui

When renovating or building a kitchen, many people do not realize that there is an association called the National Kitchen & Bath Association that offers homeowners, room designers, and the building industry guidelines that can help them with ideas regarding the design of a kitchen. When designing a kitchen one issue that needs to be resolved, which the National Kitchen & Bath Association provides guidelines, is the kitchen plumbing fixtures and counter height.

Hawaii Maui plumber

The National Kitchen & Bath Association offers important recommendations involving counter height. They offer two options that include: 28 inches to 36 inches above the finished floor and the second option 36 inches - 45 inches. For ergonomic reasons, it is essential to have kitchen plumbing fixtures and kitchen countertops set at the correct height. If a kitchen countertop is too high, you can have difficult time performing repetitive asks such as preparing food or washing the dishes. You may find yourself straining to do such activities. As well, if you have kitchen plumbing fixtures that are too low, you will find yourself constantly bending over, and over time it can cause back pain. When setting the plumbing fixture and counter height, it is highly recommended that you enlist the services of a plumber to help you determine the appropriate height.

The most common height chosen for a kitchen counter top is 36 inches (3-feet).You can buy pre-made base cabinets that have been designed for a 36 inch height because kitchen tasks can be performed with ease and comfort at this height. When shopping for plumbing fixtures, make sure you consider not only the height of the counters, but also the overall decor of the kitchen. Plumbing fixtures can vary widely among retailers so it is wise to comparison shop to find the plumbing fixtures that you truly want and also fit the decor of the kitchen.

Don’t Get Taken When Hiring a Plumber. Maui Hawaii

Invariably, there will come a time when the need arises for a professional plumber on Maui. Many Maui homeowners can handle the bulk of their plumbing needs themselves. However, many Maui homeowners have neither the knowledge or desire to complete these plumbing projects themselves. When this occurs, a professional Maui plumber must be called to complete the work for them. Many people do not like to hire service professionals because they’re not sure how to go about the entire process. Those home-owners who keep a home warranty can often lean on the warranty company to help, however, the rest of us must do it the old fashioned way. The process of hiring a plumber can be boiled down to asking for referrals, getting estimates, and demanding a warranty.

The best way to find a plumber who will not take advantage of you is to use one who is used by others you know. Ask friends and family if they know of a good Maui plumber that they have used or perhaps a friend of theirs has used. Many very good Maui plumbers receive the bulk of their work through referrals. They know that pleasing a customer will lead to more customers and cut down on their advertising costs. Plumbers who receive a lot of referrals strive for customer satisfaction.

Also, when looking for a Maui plumber to complete a job you should always get at least three estimates. Do not simply go with the lowest estimate. The plumber who provides the lowest estimate may actually do very good work; however, many times to achieve a lower bid plumbers will cut corners to reduce overhead. Even if the plumber you would like to hire is the most expensive you may be able to use the other bids to negotiate a lower price.

Finally, no matter whether it is plumbing or any other job around your home you should always ask for a warranty. If a plumber is not receptive to the idea of warrantying their work, you may need to move on to another plumber. A good plumber should always stand behind their work and guarantee your satisfaction.

Assessing What You Have

The first thing that you want to check is your kitchen sink. Get your nose close to the drain and smell; unusual odors can sometimes signal potential problems. Get under the sink and check your pipe fittings, and check along the pipes for any worn spots or dents. This appliance usually gets a lot of use, and it can wear down over time. Do some simple maintenance checks, such as turning the water on full blast and seeing how smoothly it comes out of the tap, how well the water drains, and whether your sink or the pipes below make any strange noises. This kind of kitchen plumbing check can be very helpful.

How Often Should Plumbing Check-Ups Be Performed? Maui Hawaii

To keep the plumbing system working efficiently, it is essential to perform check-ups on the system. Most experts suggest performing a plumbing check-up each year. Because the plumbing system is such an important and integral part of the home, it is important to make sure it stays in good working order.

There are a number of problems that can occur in the plumbing system that if left unfixed could become a large and expensive problem. Therefore, it is more economical to detect and repair plumbing problems as early as possible. For instance, noisy water pipes can evolve into a serious problem that will be much more expensive to repair. Rattling pipes, or water hammer, can have a sound that is a mild tapping, or banging like a drum sound, or even a high squealing sound. This can be due to loose water pipes or water in the air chambers. If left untreated, it can cause serious damage to the plumbing system. For instance, if it is a forced water heating system problem, damage could eventually occur if the system is not purged and could result in permanent damage that will be really expensive to replace.

There are problems that can occur in Maui plumbing that can be easily fixed if detected early. For instance, it is easy to tighten connections, replace old and worn showers, add caulking around plumbing fixtures, replace worn screws and washers, and clean faucets, shower heads, and aerators. When it comes to constantly running toilets, sometimes it is just the flapper valve system that is broken or worn which can be easily fixed. Before making any plumbing repairs, it is essential that a Maui homeowner shuts off the water.

Over time, leaking pipes can result in a more serious problem that will be expensive to fix. For instance, a cracked water pipe can eventually burst and can cause such damage as basement flooding. As well, a burst septic line can be a dirty and smelly problem that cannot only be expensive to repair, but expensive to clean up. The accumulation of sediment in a water pipe can result in a clogged pipe and low water pressure. It is important that pipes are checked as they may need to be flushed to push any built up sediment through and out of the system. As well, an early clog can often be easily cleared before it develops into something larger and tougher to fix.

Hawaii Maui plumber

Although it may seem like a big chore to do a plumbing check-up, it is a vital part of maintaining a home. If you ignore the system until a serious problem occurs, you could end up with a huge repair bill. If there is a problem that may possibly be serious or complicated to repair, it is important to contact a Maui professional plumber. Call Maui Plumbing 808-344-0642! Rated #1 plumber on Maui!

Finding Leaks in Your Household Plumbing - Electronic Leak Detection. Hawaii Maui

Generally speaking Maui electronic leak detection is used for locating leaks on underground water lines. Leaks above the slab and under raised foundations (wood floors), are not discernible with conventional leak detecting equipment and are better and more economically dealt with by conventional means.

Finding the leak

Sewer and drain line leaks are best located with sewer cameras. To begin with it should be determined that there is a leak under a concrete floor, before initiating electronic leak detection. Signals are a hot spot on the floor, the sound of water running when all plumbing fixtures are not in use and water coming from someplace on the floor (ground floor), or at a low point on a wall (1st story). Hot water coming from a cold tap and a water heater that does not shut off, or re-ignites quickly, are other signs. At that point one should check the water meter. If the needle is moving and no plumbing fixtures, or bibs, are in use, then there is definitely a leak somewhere. If the main shut-off valve is closed and the meter's needle stops, it indicates that the leak is in the house (building). Otherwise it is occurring between the meter and the dwelling.

Location of leak

Once it is determined that the leak is in the Maui home, the house shut-off valve can be reopened (causing the meter needle to resume movement) and the hot water shut-off valve, located on the cold water inlet to the water heater, can be closed. If the needle again stops moving, it means the leak is on the hot water line.

Once it has been determined where the leak is, the loss of water can be controlled by closing either the hot water heater shut-off valve, which will still leave you with the permanent use of cold water, or by closing the house shut-off valve, if it is a cold water leak, which will leave you with no water. If there is not substantial water coming into the dwelling, these valves can be re-opened for short term use and then re-closed during times of non-use. This allows the occupants to flush toilets, take showers, wash dishes and laundry, etc., while the diagnoses and repair process is being implemented.

To perform the leak detection, the pipes are disconnected, usually at the water heater, and pressurized with nitrogen. This particular gas is excellent for making a "high-pitched" sound that is easily detected through a set of high-quality head phones using a sophisticated listening device. Once the highest decibel of sound is located, the leak is pin-pointed. Occasionally the sound will transfer through a channel of some kind, usually plastic pipe wrapping and the point of discovery may be a few inches or feet away, but we have experienced better than 95% accuracy with our electronic leak detection equipment.

Water Bills Too High? Tips Maui Hawaii

There are several ways to find out if your water bills are higher than they need to be.

* Check faucets for dripping water. Fix a leaky faucet promptly. Be sure to check under sinks for moisture or leaks.

* Periodically check your toilets for leaks:

-Place a few drops of food coloring in the tank - not the bowl. A couple of tablespoons of instant coffee or Kool-Aid will work too.

-Check the toilet after about thirty minutes. If the water in the bowl has some of the color in it, the tank is leaking and the stopper and valve seat may need to be replaced.

* Check for underground leaks or undetected leaks in the home:

-Turn off the main water valve inside your home and then go outside and check your water meter. If it is still turning you may have an underground leak.

-Alternatively, write down the numbers on your water meter at the beginning of a period when your home is going to be unoccupied for a few hours. Check the meter when you return; if the numbers have changed, they may be a leak somewhere inside the home.

Bathroom or Shower Installation. Maui Hawaii

Contrary to popular belief, Maui shower installation does not have to be a major renovation project. You may choose to replace your old shower or bathtub with a snazzy new model with a bunch of features. And you may even use this as an opportunity to do a complete bathroom remodel. Just know that there are a myriad of options available to you, depending on your budget.

Out with the old...not necessarily!

Many people assume that if their bathtub or shower has reached the end of its working life, it has to be torn out and replaced. This can be a big, messy job for someone who just wants to renew worn out fixtures. But these days you can get custom-made bath and shower installations that can be installed right over top your existing fixtures - which won't disrupt tiles, walls, flooring or plumbing. It's an easy solution that can be completed in about 24 hours - without the mess or even the need for a plumber.

But for those who want to upgrade for added pleasure and convenience, here are a few things to consider.

Hawaii Maui plumber

Can it fit through the door?

It might be nice to replace your standard Maui tub with an oversized, two-person tub with all the jets money can buy. But before you buy anything, make sure that it will fit through the doorway. Bath tubs are usually installed in new homes before the walls and floor are finished, so even replacing your existing tub with one the same size could pose a problem.

Because of their bulkiness and their weight, one-piece tub and shower enclosures are usually reserved for new homes or major remodeling projects. For a simple replacement job, there are many sectional shower enclosures and tub surrounds on the market that, once installed, are often difficult to distinguish from one-piece units.

Hawaii Maui plumber

Bigger tubs require bigger pipes

Beyond the bathtub itself, don't forget to consider factors such as plumbing, hot water heaters and floor supports. If your home is equipped with standard half-inch water supply pipes, filling an extra deep tub will be a time-consuming task. You might want to consider installing three-quarter inch supply lines.

Similarly, consider whether your current hot water tank has the capacity to fill a large bathtub. Pairing an 80-gallon tub (or larger) with anything less than a 50 to 75 gallon hot water heater will result in a lukewarm bath. In this case, consider purchasing a bathtub that has an in-line heater. This device will heat and re-circulate the bath water continuously, resulting in consistent water temperature for the duration of your soak.

Hawaii Maui plumber

Can the floor support the extra weight?

You also need to consider whether your floor can support the weight of an oversized bathtub filled with water. While today's custom homes can accommodate most luxury tubs, bathroom floors have traditionally been built to bear the weight of a standard bathtub. If you're installing an oversized tub in an older home, the floor joists may need to be reinforced.

Whichever route you decide for your new bathtub or shower, you may want to take this opportunity to install an anti-scald device. These are special pressure-balancing valves that automatically adjust for extreme water temperature fluctuations when someone flushes the toilet or starts up a load of laundry. Anti-scald devices have become - or will soon become - mandatory in 31 states for all remodeling and new-construction projects. Check with your contractor to see if it is required in your state.

Hawaii Maui plumber

Will you need a building permit?

Be sure to check with your Maui plumbing contractor or with your municipality to see if you will need a building permit for your new shower or bathtub installation. The laws vary between municipalities, and you may be forced to start over if you begin work without a permit. Use the Cost Estimators to get a preliminary idea of the costs to install a new bathtub or shower.
